English National Curriculum - Science
Mission Objectives
Safely conduct experiments to determine how a change in pH affects the rate of reaction of an enzyme
Collect appropriate results and use these results to calculate a mean, ignoring any anomalous results
Evaluate the results from the experiment and draw appropriate conclusions from these results

Words and meanings to learn
optimum pH
the pH at which an enzyme-substrate reaction works best at.
active site
the part of the enzyme which is responsible for binding and breaking down the substrate.
denature
when the enzyme's active site changes shape so it can no longer bind with the substrate and produce a product.
initial rate of reaction
the start of the reaction; this is usually the fastest part of the reaction.
rate of reaction
a measure of the breakdown of reactant or the formation of product over a unit of time.
Samantha is an accomplished science educator with over 15 years of leadership experience and a strong background in scientific analysis. She has a proven record of leading departments effectively, improving practice, and working collaboratively with stakeholders.
In her current work, Samantha embeds evidence-informed pedagogical principles such as retrieval practice, clear modelling, and effective sequencing to support high-quality curriculum design and professional development. She draws on assessment insight and common misconceptions to help teachers secure strong student understanding.
She is a former Head of Chemistry and Sixth Form Tutor at Ilkley Grammar School, with extensive Key Stage 4 and 5 experience, and an AQA examiner, giving her valuable insight into assessment standards and exam requirements.
