Transformers calculations

Mission Objectives

Explain how the effect of an alternating current in one coil in inducing a current in another is used in transformers

Explain how the ratio of the potential differences across the two coils depends on the ratio of the number of turns on each coil

Calculate the current drawn from the input supply to provide a particular power output

Words and meanings to learn

current

the flow of electric charge around a circuit, measured in amperes (A)

magnetic field

the region around a magnet or a current-carrying wire where magnetic forces can be detected

transformer

a device that changes the size of an alternating potential difference using two coils of wire (primary and secondary) wrapped around an iron core

induced potential difference

the voltage generated across a conductor when it moves through a magnetic field or when the magnetic field around it changes

National Grid

the system of cables and transformers used to transfer electrical power from power stations to homes and industries across the country
