Words and meanings to learn
internal energy
the total energy contained within a system, including both the kinetic energy of the particles due to their motion, and the potential energy due to the forces of attraction between them
potential energy
the energy stored due to the positions and interactions between particles
kinetic energy
the energy that particles possess due to their motion
particle
a small unit of matter, such as an atom or molecule, that makes up a substance
temperature
a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance; it indicates how hot or cold a substance is and is usually measured in degrees Celsius (°C)
