fertilisation

Definition

Fertilisation is the joining of a sperm cell and an egg cell to create a new organism. It is the first step in the process of reproduction.

In humans, fertilisation happens when a sperm cell from a man fertilizes an egg cell from a woman. This usually happens during sexual intercourse.

After fertilization, the fertilised egg, called a zygote, travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus. The zygote then implants in the lining of the uterus and begins to grow into a baby.
