Unit Summary

This unit introduces children to the concept of change over time through the familiar context of their own lives and families. Children begin by exploring how they have changed from being a baby to becoming a Reception child, recognising similarities and differences between the past and the present. Through photographs, discussions, timelines, stories and practical activities, children develop an understanding that people grow and change over time.

As the unit progresses, children explore different generations within families, comparing the experiences of children, parents and grandparents. They investigate how toys, games and daily life have changed over time and begin to use simple language associated with chronology, such as past, present, older and younger. The unit concludes with children creating a simple personal timeline that celebrates important events and milestones in their own lives, helping them understand their place within a sequence of events.
