ion
an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons, giving it a net positive or negative charge
isotope
atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons, resulting in different mass numbers
electrons
negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus in energy levels or shells; the number of electrons usually equals the number of protons in a neutral atom
neutrons
neutral particles located in the nucleus of an atom; they have no charge and contribute to the atom's mass, but do not affect the element's identity
protons
positively charged particles found in the nucleus of an atom; the number of protons defines the atomic number and determines the element's identity
